Almost every music biopic follows a predictable formula: chronicling the rise, fall, and comeback of a musician or band, showcasing how iconic hits are created. However, director Michael Gracey (“The Greatest Showman”) and British pop sensation Robbie Williams are set to shake things up with their upcoming film, “Better Man”—taking an unconventional approach.
In this biopic, Robbie Williams, 50, won't be portrayed by an actor in human form. Instead, a CGI monkey will depict the iconic pop star, with actor Jonno Davies, 32, providing the motion capture and voice for the character. Williams himself will provide all the vocals. The bizarre yet creative choice has stirred curiosity, but Williams and Gracey offered some insight into their decision in an interview with Vanity Fair.
“To see himself as a performing monkey wasn’t just something he felt while famous—it was a reflection of his entire life,” Gracey explained. “He was always performing, even in his hometown.”
“Better Man” is set to chronicle Robbie Williams’ meteoric rise, dramatic fall, and remarkable resurgence, highlighting his career journey from his days in the legendary U.K. boy band Take That to his solo success. Take That remains the most successful boy band in U.K. history, boasting 12 No. 1 singles and over 14 million album sales. Williams left the group in 1995 and went on to score seven solo No. 1 singles and 13 No. 1 albums—six of which rank among the top 100 best-selling albums in U.K. chart history. The pop star has also been candid about his struggles with mental health and addiction, which he explores further in his Netflix autobiographical mini-series.
With “Better Man” set to premiere on December 25 in select theaters, Robbie Williams’ fans and moviegoers alike are eagerly anticipating this unique take on his extraordinary life and career.
